A brief summary of the September PMPub
This September our PMPub workshop’s guest speaker was Anna Juhász, a business architect of a large ERP Project at an international service company. The event’s topic was “Perspectivism in Project Management – the facets of truth”.
First we heard the event’s moderator, Balázs Prattinger, who talked about PMI and the Hungarian Chapter and the Chapter’s PMPubs, then he shared that PMI Budapest, Hungarian Chapter is looking for volunteers for various tasks. He mentioned our upcoming Art of Projects and MasterClass events, which are the largest events in our Chapter’s life.
Next, Anna Juhász took the stage. She started with the fact that she isn’t a project manager, however she is doing PM and BA work, so she knows what she’s talking about. Then the interactive part of the workshop started: first, Anna mentioned how there are different types of people and how we can group them. The first exercise was a perfect example to show how differently we think. Everyone got a piece of paper, then followed the instructions: 1. Put it behind your back, 2. Fold it once, tear down one corner, 3. Fold it again, tear down another corner. What we got were different results for the same task and same instructions, yet all of them were perfectly valid in their own ways.
After that, our speaker shared a personal story about how her message was misunderstood and impacted the other person’s life. She said that with only half a sentence you can affect people really much, and that we should think about that when we are at work. We read emails and we think they are offensive for example, even though it’s all in our head and it’s just our mood reflecting on the way we read it. We have to be careful: even a simple misunderstanding of a word can cause serious issues. Anna asked the audience to try to remember a situation of theirs and try not to do it again or do it differently in the future.
Another thing we discussed was how you should pay attention to your co-workers, your team-members. If you have time, it’s worth thinking about ways to motivate your team-members, and to get to know each other: there’s a lot of potential that you won’t know otherwise. There was also a little discussion with the audience about instincts and empathy. To be able to be empathetic, you have to be honest with yourself: what is your type? How do you react? How do you perform under pressure? All of the answers are good answers, you just have to realise your personality and try to work on it as much as possible. The other thing you have to do is to try to recognise the recipient: recognise body language and check the communication message: is the message right? Is the channel okay? If you are aware of these questions, you are closer to having a great atmosphere at your workplace and in your life as well in general.
