On 10 November 2016, project managers in Hungary gathered at the wonderful Copula Hall of the Culture Palace MOM for the PMI Budapest, Hungarian Chapter’s 4th International Conference, “Art of Projects”, a professional agora for the community devoted to project, programme and portfolio management.

This year’s edition put the focus on the cultural aspects of projects that represent key challenges in our globalised and constantly connected world.

Among the inspiring presenters, the attendees also had the chance to listen to two project management gurus in addition to the keynote speakers: David Hillson, the Risk Doctor and Harley Lovegrove, from The Bayard Partnership.

The first keynote speaker, Simona Bonghez, PhD, management consultant, trainer at colorsinprojects.ro and member of PMI Ethics Advisory Group, explained how building a strong, shared and motivating culture is neither easy nor trouble free, but is essential for the success of a complex project, mainly because of the chemistry among the people involved.

The second keynote speaker, Omar Zein, project culture and diversity consultant and author of the bestseller, Culture and Project Management, showed how culture influences our perceptions and actions. He also pointed out the difference between “cross-cultural work” and “diversity at work” and provided advice on how lead culturally diverse project teams.

Harley Lovegrove, chairman of The Bayard Partnership, change management coach, author, lecturer and public speaker, delivered an excellent presentation that enchanted and motivated the audience about the difference, or alleged difference, between project management and change management.

David Hillson, renowned as “The Risk Doctor,” helped the audience to learn how to control risk appetite, reduce risk exposure, change risk-taking habits and reach a target risk level to avoid the so-called “risk obesity” that can make us inflexible and lead to multiple problems with delivering intended benefits.

The congress was followed the next day by a master class about change management — an interactive, full-day workshop designed to give attendees deeper knowledge on the subject.

Thanks to the excellent presenters and outstanding venue, the feedback from the attendees was very positive.

The Art of Projects conference incorporates performing art and showcases the well-designed “projects” behind artistic works.

In 2016, the guest artist was Hello Wood Studio. Their innovative, fresh, natural, site-specific temporal and mobile installations appeared in some of the major European festivals and events. All their installations are developed and built in a collaborative project mode to promote the building process as a platform for discussion, innovation and exchanging knowledge.

The Art of Projects conference was also the floor for the local community to congratulate the winners of the Project Manager of the Year and of the Best PM Diploma Essay Awards. All the Hungarian project management professional associations are represented in the Award Committee (Projektmenedzsment Kiválóság Tábla) and the Hungarian Minister of Economy, Mihály Varga, is the committee’s chair.

During the last edition, the award was granted to Tamás Pugner, IPMA-C., economist and project manager at Hungarian Telecom. His latest big project success is the Hungarian Telecom (HTC) radio network modernisation project: a complete technology upgrade to 4GE/LTE of HTC at around 2,500 sites.

Finally, the winner for the Best Diploma Essay of 2016 was Nóra Faller, BSc, department of management and corporate economics, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, and her supervisor, Dr Zoltán Sebestyén, with the essay, “Creating an Effective and Practical Enterprise Project Portfolio Management System.”
